Introduction

BOTOX & Dysport

Although age comes with life experiences and wonderful memories, it also comes with some unwanted baggage. Our skin sags, wrinkles, and loosens up, giving the body and (more particularly) the face an older appearance that some people aren’t quite ready to have. At Personique in Austin, we offer an opportunity to set back the clock a bit and regain that firm and youthful look that you want with BOTOX.

WAIVE GOODBYE TO WRINKLES

WHAT IS BOTOX

BOTOX is a non-surgical procedure and one of the best solutions to diminish the look of facial lines and wrinkles. These FDA-approved injections use a purified protein administered at very low doses to prevent the nerve-produced synapses from reaching the facial areas treated, relaxing the targeted facial muscles, and smoothing wrinkles out of the skin. This is also why many younger patients request a little BOTOX to prevent future wrinkles and treat persistent frown lines. There is also the fact that BOTOX stays in the treatment area, where the injection occurred, rather than migrating to other areas of the body. This enhances safety while prolonging the anti-aging results of BOTOX injections.

BOTOX for Men

BOTOX for Men in Austin, Texas is a growing trend. Traditionally, temporary or semi-permanent cosmetic procedures have been considered a trend among women. But these days, men have become more confident about taking pride in their appearance and doing whatever it takes to reduce the signs of aging or other physical “flaws” that they’d like to see addressed.

Often, it is men who rely on looking “put together” in their careers who choose to go in the direction of procedures like BOTOX, as this treatment fits easily into their busy lifestyle without the need for recovery time.

More minimally invasive, cosmetic surgery options have several flaws, explaining why the popularity of injecting BOTOX (and other similar procedures) for men has increased by over 250% in the last ten years.

  • Getting BOTOX is quick and easy – to receive BOTOX, you simply need to pop into your plastic surgeon’s office, and then get right back to work. Since many men are choosing to improve their look to remain competitive in a challenging job market, it stands to reason that BOTOX is a wise investment in their career, as it does not require time off from work.
  • There is no recovery with BOTOX – there is no scarring, and there is no need to massively limit activities, or do anything but live your ordinary life.
  • Results last but aren’t permanent – as your aesthetic preferences change, you can approach the use of BOTOX in a way that addresses these needs. With plastic surgery, the results are often permanent, and further enhancement requires going under the knife again.
  • BOTOX offers subtle change – appearance is enhanced, but men can ensure the administration is approached in such a way that they simply appear more refreshed. Likewise, getting BOTOX can happen under the radar, meaning that professional colleagues and friends don’t need to be privy to your personal affairs, as you’ll never miss a beat in life.
  • BOTOX can address other issues – BOTOX is most commonly used to combat the physical effects of facial aging, however, it can also be used to treat conditions like hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). This is another male BOTOX procedure that can greatly improve the patient’s self-confidence.

Other uses for BOTOX

As mentioned above, BOTOX has other uses besides treating the visible effects of aging. When performed by an educated and trained professional, this injectable can help improve the following conditions.

  • Excessive sweating

Many people experience a condition called Hyperhidrosis, which is the production of sweat beyond what is necessary for regulating body temperature, causing considerable discomfort and embarrassment. BOTOX can block the signals from nerves that stimulate sweat glands, thereby reducing excessive sweating.

After thoroughly cleansing the treatment area and applying a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort during the procedure, your provider will skillfully administer the injections with precision to target the areas affected by excessive sweating. The injections are quick and efficient. Almost immediately after the procedure, you’ll start to notice significant improvements in your issues with sweating.

  • Migraines

No one likes having headaches, but migraines are a beast of their own, potentially becoming debilitating in their own right. Over the last several years, BOTOX has helped patients suffering from chronic migraines. Chronic migraines are classified as “15 or more headaches days each month, eight or more migraines during those headache days, or headaches that last for four or more hours each”. By making injections into the “trigger areas” (i.e. your forehead, temples, and back of your head and neck), our trained providers can help reduce these painful headaches for weeks at a time.

Please keep in mind that these treatments do not have a 100% success rate, but many of the patients that we have treated have been able to certainly see some significant changes.

WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR A BOTOX?

Ideal candidates for an Austin BOTOX treatment area are:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Concerned or troubled with facial wrinkles
  • Have moderately realistic expectations concerning the results of the procedure
  • In good physical health
  • Not pregnant or nursing

BOTOX injections work most effectively in areas that are constantly being exercised and always moving, like around the forehead and the eyebrows. BOTOX is commonly used to smooth out wrinkles caused by scowl lines (between the brows) and crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eyes).

Besides diminishing wrinkles, BOTOX can also be administered to raise the eyebrows to make the patient look more awake and refreshed.

BOTOX isn’t only for cosmetic purposes, either. It’s frequently used to treat migraines and muscle spasms, and even to reduce heavy sweating by desensitizing the nerves around these areas.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY OF BOTOX

BOTOX treatment is very fast and effective. In just under 15 minutes, the patient receives some local numbing, and a series of injections are administered to their “problem areas” using an ultra-fine needle directly into the injection sites. Our expert injectors assess patient needs and only add more if necessary.

Once the targeted face muscle is treated, the wrinkled appearance is instantly reduced as the skin regains its youthful elasticity and glow. Since the treatment is so minimally invasive, most patients can resume normal activities immediately without any downtime or recovery necessary.

BOTOX RECOVERY

Once you are finished with your session, you may be asked to stay for about 10 – 15 minutes so that we can make sure you have no allergic reactions to the toxin. Once you are cleared, then you can go about your daily routine. You will be given a list of instructions to follow so that you can get the most out of your BOTOX as well as a healthy recovery.

We highly suggest waiting at least 24  hours before you exercise to avoid spreading the filler to relax muscles on other parts of your body. Not only could it reduce the effectiveness of the BOTOX, but it could also increase the likelihood of bruising. You are encouraged to focus on controlling your own facial muscles and expressions like frowning and smiling and lifting your eyebrows.

Additionally, for the first 24 hours, you should avoid wearing makeup, ingesting alcohol, or taking painkillers of any kind. If you do feel any pain or discomfort, you can lightly use an ice pack for 10 – 15 minutes at a time.

Finally, try to avoid any sun or heat exposure for the first 1 – 2 days, so stay away from the following:

  • Hot tubs
  • Saunas
  • Taking hot showers or baths
  • Tanning beds
  • The sun and being directly in it

DYSPORT

Dysport is the newest wrinkle relaxer in the U.S. to be approved by the FDA to smooth forehead wrinkles and frown lines. This treatment contains the same injectable protein found in Botox products: an FDA-approved, purified protein (botulinum toxin type A) that is injected into the muscles that cause facial wrinkles. especially effective in treating deep lines and creases on the forehead, as well as deep frown lines in between the eyebrows. Smoothing of these lines via Dysport injectable treatment is temporary, typically lasting for up to four months.

Ideal candidates for Dysport treatment are under 65 years of age and are looking for a temporary solution to severe frown lines and/or wrinkles on the forehead and along the brow line. Potential Dysport clients should be free of any botulinum-related allergies or allergies related to cow’s milk proteins. Patients considering Dysport or any other injectable treatment or filler should make sure their skin at the proposed injection site is relatively healthy and free of any topical allergies, irritations, or infections.

At Personique®, Dysport treatment is administered by one of our board-certified plastic surgeons in a safe, clean medical spa environment. We aim to provide subtle yet dramatic results that enhance your natural beauty. Many Dysport clients are surprised at how much of a difference this simple procedure can make in smoothing those pesky “parentheses” between the brows, contributing to a relaxed, well-rested facial look, overall. Once you have seen a Personique® professional for your initial consultation, the entire Dysport procedure takes about 15 minutes from start to finish.

In most cases, wrinkles treated with Dysport will be nearly invisible 1-2 days after injection at the site. Though results may vary slightly from one client to the next, our board-certified plastic surgeons are experts in providing safe, effective treatments that are designed to help you look and feel your best, whatever your beauty goals. We aim to provide customized results that look natural and effortless, allowing your beauty, not the plastic surgery, to speak for itself. Dysport is also a convenient method of treating wrinkles, requiring no downtime between the procedure and recovery. Typically, patients can resume normal activity right away, following the in-office treatment.

BOTOX FAQs

Is BOTOX painful?

BOTOX injections are not a painful procedure, however, some patients have expressed feeling a pinching or stinging sensation from the needle insertion. Any pain felt will be temporary and should be very minimal.

How many appointments will I need?

In most instances, BOTOX treatments are needed every 4-6 months. However, many patients find that after their first BOTOX treatment, the muscles will eventually become used to relaxing, so treatments can be spaced out longer.

How long until I see results?

Your BOTOX results typically are noticeable immediately after your treatment, however, the targeted face muscles will take 2 – 4 days to loosen up to be able to move freely again. A typical BOTOX treatment takes up to 2 weeks to see the maximum results from BOTOX.

Can I combine BOTOX with other procedures?

Many of our clients will combine their BOTOX cosmetic procedure with other treatments, such as a Chemical Peel or Microdermabrasion, however, it varies on a patient-to-patient basis. If you are interested in having additional procedures or treatments performed, please discuss this with the technician during your consultation. They will be able to use their experience and knowledge to determine the best treatment combinations for you.

What are the risks associated with BOTOX?

BOTOX is a very safe procedure that most patients’ staff has plenty of experience with, however, some potential risks and side effects are associated with the treatment, such as:

  • Crooked smile
  • Drooling
  • Droopy eyelid or cockeyed eyebrows
  • Eye dryness or excessive tearing
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Headache
  • Pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site

Most of these side effects should correct themselves over a few days, however, if you are noticing any long-lasting or overly concerning issues, please contact our office immediately.

How does BOTOX work?

BOTOX shots block certain nerve signals that cause the targeted facial muscle to contract. The most common use of these injections is to relax the facial muscles that cause frown lines, other facial lines (i.e. smoker’s lines, bunny lines, perioral lines, etc.), and wrinkles BOTOX injections also are used to ease symptoms of some health conditions.

Will I be able to control my facial appearance?

Absolutely! The muscles are simply relaxed, so you will have full use of your facial expressions. You can still frown, smile, or look surprised, but without wrinkles smile lines, and creases.

What can’t I do after getting BOTOX?

While most patients can continue their normal routine after their BOTOX treatment, there are certain things you should do to ensure the best possible results and avoid unnecessary complications. We will provide you with full instructions on what you should not do and what you can do, these are some of the more common things to avoid:

  • Rub your face: You may initially feel uncomfortable after your treatment, but it’s not a painful feeling. Due to the nature of the treatment, your facial muscles will feel tensed up, however, this is completely normal. You may have the natural inclination to rub or massage your face, but you must avoid doing so. This will help avoid migration of the injectable to other areas of your face.
  • Exposing yourself to the Sun and strong heat: Your skin will, unfortunately, have an adverse reaction if overexposed to UV rays, which can create unwanted darkened spots in the treated areas, resulting in a longer recovery period.
  • Excessive exercise: Since the BOTOX injectable works by temporarily paralyzing specific nerve impulses to the muscle tissues, aggressive exercise can cause painful effects on the muscles you WANT to stay active. We strongly recommend slow, low-impact workouts for the first few days post-treatment, and then gradually resuming your normal routine.
  • Taking blood thinners: Medications like Aspirin or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can cause excessive bleeding and bruising in the treated areas, which is why it’s so important to stop usage of these medications at least two weeks before your treatment and three months post-treatment. If you are taking these medications due to pre-existing issues, please discuss them during your consultation so that we can work with you.
  • Consuming alcohol: As fun as libations are, they do affect normal blood coagulation and can cause adverse side effects like excessive swelling, skin sensitivity, and the additional risk of bruises and bleeding.
  • Washing your face with soap: Cleaning your face is a natural desire that helps promote good skin health, however, you will need to avoid any urges to wash your face at least six hours after your BOTOX treatment. You CAN wash your face twice a day after the first few days post-injection, in fact – we encourage it! You should use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water to prevent potential skin sensitivity that is normally caused by chemicals found in your standard soaps.
  • Applying topical products or ointments: We understand that you are looking to improve your facial appearance with BOTOX, which is why it’s important to avoid any products such as moisturizers, because these types of products may cause unwanted reactions.
  • Lying facedown the first few hours after treatment: Much like massaging or rubbing your face, laying flat or applying pressure onto the injected site may cause further undesirable results like bruising, leading to complications requiring additional medical attention.

What is the difference between BOTOX and Dermal fillers?

While both injectables are non-surgical procedures used to help patients achieve a fresh and youthful facial appearance there is a big difference between these two cosmetic injections.

Botulinum Toxin type A is an injectable treatment that when used in moderation, can affect the chemical signals that cause muscle movement, effectively paralyzing them to provide you with smoother skin texture, devoid of signs of aging such as facial lines such as forehead lines and crow’s feet. Certain neuromodulators like BOTOX have even been able to improve excessive underarm sweating or potentially relieve chronic migraines.

There are different types of injectable fillers out there, however Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is the most common one. HA is a natural substance that cushions and lubricates your joints and other tissues. Different forms of hyaluronic acid are used in cosmetic dermatology to improve volume and encourage collagen production.
